La Nupes will not make a joint list for the European elections on June 9, 2024. But La France Insoumise will put pressure on its partners to the end, this is the information in the brief.
When Manuel Bompard, coordinator of La France Insoumise, says that he will fight to the end to obtain the union of the left in the European elections next June, it really means until the end: in short, until submission of lists which will take place in the spring! A desire which suggests six months of incessant calls for unity and pressure of all kinds on their little comrades. The Insoumis will surf on the call of the young people of Nupes a few days ago who urge their elders to unite. A petition from left-wing mayors has just been launched for a single list.
The Insoumis also want to meet outgoing European deputies, environmentalists and socialists, to try to convince them to join a list “unitary”. “We are already talking with some in the corridors of the parliament in Strasbourg”, confides a rebellious elected official who assures him “not everyone is comfortable” with go-it-alone strategies.
Together with Europeans or each for themselves in the event of legislative elections
To hope to change the situation of autonomous lists, LFI is watching for the slightest survey. So far, the left’s total score with separate lists is higher than a single list, but polls may change. The Insoumis also secretly hope for help… from Emmanuel Macron! The head of state could threaten dissolution given the risks of motions of censure in the National Assembly. “The whole Nupes would be forced to come together to survive”, advances a Rebel. The argument is obvious: Europeans together otherwise it’s every man for himself in the event of legislative elections, with fewer elected officials on arrival for each Nupes group.
The Nupes partners are annoyed by this relentlessness of the Insoumis. The communists are preparing to take the blows. “They will ruin our lives until the end”slides a frame. “They need to stop dangling something that won’t happen and let’s talk about the substance,” demands an elected official. The risk is to see the campaign focused on this union-disunion question. Which would prevent the candidates from developing their arguments, “even if it means not shining in the Europeans, LFI wants to take the entire left with it in its fall”, annoys a socialist. Environmentalists are also tired of the rebels not understanding that no means no.
Raphaël Gluksmann head of the PS list?
Raphaël Glucksmann, of the Place publique movement, was the head of the PS list in the 2019 European elections. In an interview with The Obs, he says he is available to be a candidate again next June. The Socialist Party procrastinates: “We will decide later on the incarnation, it is legitimate but it could also be someone else, there are candidates who come forward internally”. A very relative enthusiasm, due to the timing of the interview with Raphaël Glucksmann, not concerted with the PS.
