The bacteria causing botulism secretes powerful toxins responsible for this very rare disease, which is fatal in 5% has 10% cases. Botulinum toxins block transmissions between nerves and muscles, causing paralysis. When ingested, it first causes digestive problems, including nausea and vomiting. Severe cases progress to descending paralysis affecting the limbs and trunk. In the most severe form, the respiratory muscles are affected, which can lead to death.
An antidote not always effective
The bacteria producing botulinum toxins develops particularly in foods preserved without sufficient sterilization. To treat poisoning, the symptoms must be managed with, for the most serious cases, hospitalization in intensive care with respiratory assistance. Doctors also have an antidote, but it is not always effective. The majority of patients treated fairly quickly recover without after-effects.
