The national spokesperson for the Alliance Police nationale union reacted to the comments of Gérald Darmanin, who announced that a “CRS unit will take up residence in Marseille in November”in response to violence linked to drug trafficking.
franceinfo: Gérald Darmanin declared that the police and the gendarmerie were not the only ones who could resolve this violence. What do you think ?

We’ve been saying this for a long time. We are on the ground, we see the difficulties that we encounter in the different cities of all the cities of France, particularly in Marseille. It is obvious that despite our hard work, despite the will and determination we have to counter this drug trafficking, we realize that we cannot do it. Yes, we arrest drug traffickers, we seize a lot of drugs and weapons, but we realize that there continues to be a lot of drug trafficking and a lot of users. There are more and more settling of scores with atrocious shootings, notably the one which happened in the Saint-Thys district, two days ago, with this 24-year-old girl who took a Kalashnikov bullet while She is simply in her room, in front of her computer. It’s appalling for police officers to intervene on a scene like that.
Is there a form of impotence?
Of course. We had additional personnel, Gérald Darmanin very regularly sent us CRS reinforcements, but you can put almost 10,000 police officers in Marseille, this drug trafficking will continue to continue quite simply because today, we have to deal with this problem overall. I’m talking about 12/14 year old children who are in this trafficking and who should be in school. We must strengthen this school of the Republic, there is also parental responsibility. It’s not normal that these kids are involved in drug trafficking and that their parents don’t stop it. Prevention work is also needed in certain middle schools or primary schools to explain the harm caused by drugs. The police work has been done for several years and we cannot blame the police for doing a fantastic job. We need to have a justice system that sentences these individuals very harshly to make them not want to stay in this trafficking business or start again when they leave prison.
There is also the problem of weapons. How do you explain that there are so many in circulation?
This is our first concern. There are a lot of weapons in circulation and these individuals are capable of shooting at police officers. They don’t like us very much and they won’t hesitate the day they see the need. How can we fight arms trafficking? HAS through seizures, very in-depth investigations, but here again we need justice which condemns very harshly. With everything that happened this summer, the riots, the urban guerrilla warfare, we were on the verge of implosion and it was the police and gendarmerie forces who held the balance of this country. Our morale is low, we are Republican police officers, but we must be given the legal means to work. When police officers go to work, they know that they can be injured, killed, but also go to prison. It’s a real difficulty.
