Starting Tuesday, September 12, the Supreme Court examines the judicial reform that divides the country. Why is it so divisive? We enlighten you.

Tuesday September 12, the hearings which are broadcast live could last weeks, even months. The 15 judges of the Israeli Supreme Court begin examining the appeal against the judicial reform, which has inflamed the country since the beginning of the year. “We are in plenary session to examine eight appeals which were filed against amendment number 3”introduced Esther Haut, the President of the Supreme Court.

Strong opposition

This amendment was voted for by the far-right majority last July. It removes the right of the Supreme Court to oppose a decision of the government or parliament that it considers unreasonable. According to critics of the reform, it would be an attack on the division of powers, and therefore on democracy. “Israeli democracy is in danger and threatened”assures an opponent. In court on Tuesday, there were also government supporters. One of them believes “want to balance the system”.
