More than 18,000 families are affected by the earthquake. Marrakech has been relatively spared compared to the rest of the region. Update with Djamel Mazi on site, this Monday, September 11.

There remains a scent of carefreeness in the economic capital of Morocco, Marrakech. “There is a sort of scent of carefreeness that reigns in the city center. It remains a veritable anthill, with the souk and the orange juice sellers who continue to shout at tourists. (…) tourism represents a financial windfall for the country as the high season begins”specifies Djamel Mazi, this Monday, September 11.

Pressure on the hospital

It is also the capital of healthcare. “I am next to the Marrakech University Hospital, it is here that the immensity of the victims is flocking. The operations follow one another, the patients are polytraumatized. In the corridors of the CHU, things are starting to calm down. Patients now come from further and further away, from the High Atlas (…) right in front of the hospital, you have to wait hours to donate blood”concludes the journalist.
