The director general of the national police went to Marseille to meet the staff of the anti-crime brigades (BAC), angry after the incarceration of one of theirs, suspected of having beaten a man on the sidelines of the riots in early July. In this case, four police officers, including the one placed in detention, are indicted.

Sébastien Greneron ensures that this visit has “license to dialogue”. The Director General of the National Police and the Central Director of Public Security “showed their support, heard them”. The trade unionist claims that“there were a lot of emotions […] Colleagues needed support from the great police chief.”

A pretrial detention that poses a problem

Asked about the indictments of the four police officers in this case and the incarceration of one of them, Sébastien Greneron replies that it is indeed the detention that is the problem: “It is this pre-trial detention that blocks”. He explains why: “For us, the grounds for pre-trial detention are not met […] We are told that our police colleague is in pre-trial detention for the risk of consulting with the others”he continues.

“In order not to harm the investigation, there was no need for us to imprison this policeman.”

For Sébastien Greneron, there is therefore no real risk of harming the investigation: “He is not going to go abroad and the other three are under judicial control. That there is an investigation, we hear it, one person has been injured. We do not understand this hasty decision on pre-trial detention.”

He emphasizes not being there “to exert pressure or to challenge” court decisions: “If the examining magistrate decided the indictments it is that he has convincing elements but once again an indictment does not mean being guilty”. “We don’t consider ourselves above the law.he concludes, but we are not below”.
