A body was recovered from the Saint-Charles River

The body of a young woman was fished out of the Saint-Charles River Thursday evening in Quebec.

It is believed to be a young adult woman, approximately 18 years old. The cyclist would have fallen into the water for an as yet unexplained reason.

The body was taken out of the water around 8:15 p.m. According to protocol, resuscitation maneuvers were unsuccessfully attempted in the ambulance, which took long minutes before leaving the scene.

All emergency services were alerted shortly after 4.30pm and the major operation continued for a few hours after the initial call.

The nautical rescue team and the Coast Guard were also at work with the SQ divers.

A drone and a helicopter were also used near the Saint-Roch district, near rue du Pont and 3rd Avenue. We mainly scanned the river between the Dorchester bridge and the Joseph-Samson bridge-tunnel.

On board the boats, the teams checked the banks towards the port.

The police didn’t take any chances.

Verifications were necessary in order to validate the information, some of which was contradictory at the start.

Police say a child initially asked for help, claiming to have seen an adult in the water. A bicycle and shoes were found. A woman in her 50s reportedly jumped into the river to try to locate the missing person.

However, the information was difficult to collect since the area is inhabited by several immigrants who speak neither French nor English.

A woman was also in crisis near the river.

A coroner

For the moment, the circumstances of the tragedy remain nebulous. Stupid accident or desperate gesture, the police do not rule out any hypothesis.

It is too early to confirm the identity of the body found. The case was forwarded to the coroner.

Near Quebec, another nautical incident occurred on Wednesday. A young Ukrainian was reportedly carried away by the current of the Etchemin River, in the Saint-Anselme sector.
