A two-run Manny Machado single was enough for the San Diego Padres to earn a 2-0 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday night.
Yu Darvish (7-6) struck out seven in six innings. He allowed four hits and three walks to help the Padres (46-50) to a second straight win.
Relievers Steven Wilson, Nick Martinez and Josh Hader preserved the visitors’ lead. Hader completed his 23e rescue of the season.
The Blue Jays’ (53-43) inability to score ruined Jose Berrios’ (8-7) quality start. The starter struck out nine opponents and gave up only two runs, four hits and as many free passes in six innings on the mound.
Blue Jays manager John Schneider said that even though Berríos didn’t have the necessary offensive support, it would happen over the course of the season.
“All you can ask of your players is to fight and give the team a chance to win,” Schneider said. That’s what he did tonight. It’s only a matter of time before players capitalize. »
The Gunner didn’t allow a run in the first four innings before the Padres scored twice on his back in the fifth.
Trent Grisham walked and Ha-Seong Kim was hit with a shot. They then simultaneously stole third and second and Berrios intentionally walked Juan Soto with two outs.
But Machado hit a single to left field — breaking his stick on the streak — to push Grisham and Kim home. Berrios then struck out Xander Bogaerts to end the inning.
“Machado is on fire right now,” Padres manager Bob Melvin said. He also hits big hits. All it took today was just one strike. »
Yimi Garcia, Trevor Richards and Tim Mayza were eventually called in relief.
Back-to-back singles from Bo Bichette and Brandon Belt gave the Jays some hope in the eighth inning. But flyouts from Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Matt Chapman, followed by a strikeout from Whit Merrifield, ended the threat.
