A heat wave, considered extremely dangerous, hit the United States on Sunday July 16. This is the case for example in Arizona where the thermometer has been above 43°C on average for 16 days.

On this day, in Las Vegas, the temperature could reach 47°C. Meteorologists recommend that tourists and residents go outside as little as possible between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. “We will quickly return to the galleries of air-conditioned hotels. Walking in the street, especially in the afternoon, is the worst, don’t even think of walking on the central boulevard of Las Vegas”reports a tourist. On the border between California and Nevada, it is the absolute heat record on our planet that could be beaten. Death Valley could reach 54°C, beating the extremes recorded in 2020 and 2021.

Cities still habitable?

The heat dome that has hit the United States places nearly a third of Americans on heat wave alert, as do pets. Air conditioning repairers are a real emergency service. Many cities have set up air-conditioned shelters and water fountains for residents, especially children. Doctors and experts wonder if cities like Phoenix will still be livable in the coming decades.
