The presence of the Indian Prime Minister, guest of honor at the military parade on the Champs-Elysées, has been decried by several associations and NGOs which denounce an authoritarian drift of power in India and repression against the Muslim minority.
The Minister of the Armed Forces, Sébastien Lecornu, returned on Friday July 14 to the controversy surrounding the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was the guest of honor at the July 14 parade on the Champs-Elysées. “I understand the debates”he said on France 2, recalling however that“it represents one of the greatest countries in the world”. The invitation of the Indian Prime Minister had been criticized by several associations and NGOs which denounce an authoritarian drift of Indian power and repression against the Muslim minority.
“A great partner”
“If we look at what France is, fortunately on the national holiday, we have the representative of this great country by our side.estimated the Minister of the Armed Forces. It says something about who we are: we are still a great country with the capacity to discuss. For Sébastien Lecornu, India “is a great partner, especially in terms of security, especially in the Indian Ocean”. IIndia has moreover given its agreement in principle to France for the purchase of 26 Rafale planes and three Scorpene submarines.
