The government is changing its tone on the debt. “Debt reduction is a national emergency”launched the Minister Delegate for Public Accounts, Gabriel Attal, on Tuesday July 11, in an interview with Figaro.

“We assume to prefer a proactive, but progressive debt reduction, to an austerity which would have harmful consequences on economic activity.”

Among the avenues for possible savings, the minister mentions the cost of certain training contracts invoiced to the State “at full price with very high margins”which the government intends to take over “a part”. He also repeats wanting to stopr “the increase in the number of sick leaves”.

Bercy’s services will also help opposition parliamentarians calculate the cost of their proposals for the 2024 budget, which will be debated in the fall. “If the opposition has the right to oppose, it has above all the duty to propose”says the Minister in Le Figaro. “For the first time, I will therefore give all parliamentarians, even those in opposition, the possibility of asking my administration to quantify some of their proposals so that they can imagine alternatives, counter-budgets”explains Gabriel Attal.
