A welcome announcement months after the start of the counter-offensive of kyiv. Upon setting foot in Vilnius (Lithuania), Tuesday July 11, Emmanuel Macron announced that France would deliver long-range “Scalp” missiles to Ukraine. “We have decided to deliver new missiles capable of deep strikes to Ukraine”declared the French president on his arrival at the site of the NATO summit.
It remains to be seen how much: the volumes that will be sent have not yet been communicated. To date, France has “less than 400”slips the specialized magazine Defense and international security. “Scalp” missiles will be delivered “keeping the clarity, the coherence of our doctrine, that is to say allowing Ukraine to defend its territory”, explained Emmanuel Macron, thus implicitly excluding any use to strike Russia.
A range of more than 250 km
The Storm Shadow cruise missile, called “Scalp” by the French army, is being jointly developed by the United Kingdom and France. Launched from the air, it has a range of more than 250 km, more than any other weapons supplied to kyiv by Western countries. With their long range, these missiles have the ability to reach areas in eastern Ukraine controlled by Russian forces. The United Kingdom was the first country to announce, in May, the shipment of long-range missiles to Ukraine. Russia claimed a few days later to have intercepted a Storm Shadow.
