Assa and Adama Traoré’s brother released from police custody, but still hospitalized

The police custody of one of the brothers of Assa and Adama Traoré, this 24-year-old young man, who died shortly after his arrest by the gendarmes in July 2016, was lifted overnight, the Paris prosecutor’s office told franceinfo Sunday July 9.

On the other hand, he is still hospitalized after being arrested on Saturday July 8 during the rally in tribute to Adama Traoré, who had been banned by the Paris police headquarters. The brother of Assa and Adama Traoré was then placed in police custody for “violence against a person holding public authority and rebellion”.

According to a source familiar with the matter, Assa Traoré’s brother is accused of having “hit” to a police commissioner on the Place de la République in the early afternoon. He was later recognized in rue du faubourg Saint-Martin. According to the same source, he was injured in the eye during his arrest.

An arrest denounced on the left

On franceinfo, Assa Traoré denounced a “political ban”. The arrest, muscular and filmed by several witnesses – we see him resisting then being tackled and held face to the ground by several police officers – provoked convictions from several left-wing elected officials on social networks.

At least 2,000 people gathered in Paris this Saturday, despite the ban from the police headquarters. A march planned for the seventh anniversary of Adama Traoré’s death had already been banned in Val-d’Oise by the prefect, who considered that there was a risk of public order disturbances.

Although not authorised, the gathering in Place de la République took place without major incident. However, three journalists were victims of violence by the order. One of them has indicated that he will seize the IGPN.
