The Swiss Islamologist Tariq Ramadan is referred to the criminal court of Paris for charges of rape on four plaintiffs, learned Friday July 7 franceinfo which had access to the indictment order. Among these four women is Henda Ayari, whose complaint had helped launch the case. On the other hand, the dismissal was pronounced for the case of two other women.

In its order, which franceinfo was able to consult, the Paris court orders a referral to the Paris criminal court for suspicion of rape committed between 2009 and 2016 on four women, including a rape in October 2009 in Lyon on a disabled person physical.

Tariq Ramadan announced Friday afternoon to franceinfo, through his lawyer Pascal Garbarini, that he was appealing this order before the investigating chamber. “Mr. Ramadan always said he was innocent“said the lawyer.”The elements and investigations made are favorable to my client. The logic would have been not to pronounce two dismissals but six“, he believes.

Iconic #MeToo wave case

In July 2022, the Paris prosecutor’s office had requested a trial for these suspicions of rape on four women. Emblematic of the #MeToo wave, this file had caused the fall of Mr. Ramadan, a figure as charismatic as it is contested by Islam in Europe.

In February 2018, Tariq Ramadan was indicted and then imprisoned for ten months in Fleury-Mérogis, south of Paris. After initially denying extramarital sex, the Islamologist was compelled by digital evidence to recognize “dominance relationships“, rough but “granted“.

Last May, Tariq Ramadan was acquitted during a trial in Geneva, Switzerland, while he was being prosecuted for the rape of a woman in 2008. The complainant appealed this decision, as permitted by justice in Swiss.
