Yankees–Orioles | Cameraman shot in the head

(New York) A cameraman hit in the head by an inaccurate relay Wednesday evening at Yankee Stadium suffered a fractured eye socket and returned to his home where he is recuperating.

This was announced by YES network officials in a press release sent on Thursday.

Posted immediately beside the New York Yankees dugout on the first base side, YES Network’s Pete Stendel was hit by a rushed ball thrown by Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson of Baltimore, who was trying to complete a double play in the fifth inning.

Stendel was taken to a hospital, and YES Network officials said late Wednesday that he was conscious and was undergoing tests. The network issued an update on Thursday confirming the nature of the injury and stating that Stendel had been discharged.

The game was halted for approximately 17 minutes, as Yankees medical staff administered first aid to Stendel. The Orioles players left the field and waited in the dugout. Players from both teams looked worried as a pin drop could have been heard in the stadium.

Stendel was put on a stretcher and carried outside the playing area. He waved two fingers, a gesture that was met with cheers from the crowd of 36,022 spectators.
