Emmanuel Macron received, this Sunday evening, the main ministers of his government to take stock of the situation. The Head of State also issued the agenda for the next few hours in the face of urban violence.
After the urban violence of recent days, the President of the Republic brought together government ministers this Sunday evening to “a status report”. Emmanuel Macron also delivered his objectives for the next few days. The Head of State will first summon a symbol by receiving, at the Elysee Palace, this Tuesday, more than 220 mayors of municipalities victims of violence and degradation.
>>> Urban violence: justice “will do its best”, assures the president of the National Conference of Public Prosecutors
The President called on his government “to do everything to restore order and guarantee a return to calm”. Since Saturday, the number of arrests has dropped significantly. There is also less violence in the street. But, on the night of Saturday to Sunday, the ram attack on the home of the mayor of Haÿ-les-Roses in Val-de-Marne was a real shock for the executive.
“The overall image remains quite negative”, even said a senior minister. The whole difficulty is to provide an emergency response, a security response while beginning to envisage a way out of the crisis. “Speak to the neighborhoods but be firm with the thugs”, summed up this Monday the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin.
The presidents of political parties received at the Élysée
The President of the Republic will also open a new cycle of consultations. He thus invited to the Elysée, this Monday, the presidents of the two chambers of Parliament: Gérard Larcher, for the Senate, and Yaël Braun-Pivet, for the National Assembly. At the same time, Emmanuel Macron asked the Prime Minister, Elisabeth Borne, to receive the presidents of the political parties represented in the Assembly. It will be without Marine Le Pen, who asked to be received by Emmanuel Macron, the National Rally will therefore send the deputy Sébastien Chenu.
With these appointments, the goal is to think long term. The Head of State wants to understand the reasons for these riots. Emmanuel Macron had theorized decivilization, denounced the role of social networks last week, calling for the responsibility of parents. One of his advisers also declared: “the president is neither for the cessation of allowances, nor for yet another suburban plan”.
The cards for a future reshuffle reshuffled
These events will still hover, in particular above the examination of the bill of orientation and programming of the Ministry of Justice which begins in the afternoon of this Monday at the National Assembly. The agenda for the next few weeks is also modified, it will be devoted to the situation in the country. Emmanuel Macron has already canceled his official visit to Germany which was to start on Monday. It seems a long way from the trip to Marseille, just a week ago, which the president thought of as a new start in his second five-year term. He is now caught up in the management of a new crisis. “What He Does Best”assures one of his supporters.
The week that opens was to launch the home stretch of the famous “100 days of appeasement”, considered by many as a reprieve for the government of Elisabeth Borne. Several ministers and advisers had, moreover, identified this week as that of a possible government reshuffle, but, obviously, these cards have since been reshuffled.
