“I want to tell you that the minister lied in front of the national representation”, assured Manuel Bompard, Tuesday, June 27, on franceinfo. The LFI deputy reacted to the words of Gérald Darmanin, after the death of a 17-year-old teenager, killed by a police officer during a traffic check.
For the parliamentarian, the Minister of the Interior did not tell the truth, by assuring the Assembly that he “there had been fewer shots” of police and “fewer fatal cases”, since the change of the law in 2017. Since that date, the police can shoot at a vehicle when a driver does not comply and when it is likely to endanger their life or that of others. In front of the deputies, Gérald Darmanin also has“extremely shocking images”by calling “respect the bereavement of families and the presumption of innocence of police officers”.
But Manuel Bompard does not have the same figures as the minister. “Between 2017 and 2022, 30 people died following a refusal to comply. Between 2002 and 2017, 17 people died following a refusal to comply”, assured the deputy. To support his point, the deputy cites a survey by the Basta Mag site, which affirms that the number of people killed following a refusal to comply “increased considerably” since the law of 2017.
