The Montreal Canadiens acquired the rights of Colorado Avalanche forward Alex Newhook on Tuesday.
The Montreal team sent the 31e and 37e Avalanche overall pick in the 2023 draft as well as defenseman Gianni Fairbrother.
The 22-year-old Newhook had 14 goals and 30 points in 82 games with the Avalanche last season. He added one assist in seven playoff games.
A native of Newfoundland, Newhook has 27 goals and 39 assists in 159 NHL games. He has spent his entire career with the Avalanche, who selected him in the first round, 16th overall, in the 2019 draft.
A five-foot-10, 190-pound center, Newhook helped the Avalanche win the Stanley Cup in 2022. He had four assists in 12 playoff games.
