would there be two Emmanuel Macron?

Emmanuel Macron is at the heart of the summit he had convened to initiate a “new global financial pact”. And the head of state has shown that he is elusive. Renaud Dély’s editorial.

Emmanuel Macron was the exceptional guest of franceinfo on Friday June 23, live from the Palais Brongniart, as part of the Summit for a new global financial pact in Paris. This great international mass is full of generous commitments to accelerate the fight against climate change, with an Emmanuel Macron at the helm who poses as the guarantor, almost the godfather, of a new North-South balance.

He was delighted Thursday that a symbolic objective has been reached, the milestone of 100 billion dollars devoted by the developed countries to the financing of the ecological transition in the developing countries.

Dark green… and pale green

And we come to ask a question: would there be two Emmanuel Macron? One is disruptive, daring, the green Emmanuel Macron, very green, which is deployed on the international scene. The host of this summit who does not hesitate to shake up his counterparts and teach them a lesson. For example by urging them to “to assume” a real “public funding shock“to help poor countries. The Head of State who bends over the bedside of the South and who will receive lunch at the Elysée this afternoon a figure pampered by the radical left, Brazilian President Lula.

And then the other, the pale green Emmanuel Macron of the national scene. The one who is accused of immobility by his opponents. Which dissolves the collective Les Uprisings of the Earth and causes an outcry among the supporters of political ecology. Or even the one who called at the beginning of May for a “pause” in European environmental regulations so as not to penalize our companies, which are in competition with countries with lower ecological standards.

Taxation again and again…

There is one area where this Janus side of a two-faced President appears dramatically: taxation! To finance the ecological transition, Emmanuel Macron wished Thursday the extension at the international level of the taxes which weigh on the one hand on the financial transactions, on the other hand on the airlines.

The President is proud that France is a pioneer in this area. And yet, the same hastened to bury the suggestion of an advanced climate ISF last month in the report commissioned by Elisabeth Borne from the economist Jean Pisani-Ferry. There remains a Lorrain question: can these two Emmanuel Macron be sincere “at the same time”?
