Bègles, twenty-seven thousand inhabitants, in the Bordeaux conurbation, will it be the first city in France to legalize cannabis? As elsewhere in France, the city is confronted with drug trafficking. For the environmentalist mayor of Bègles, Clément Rossignol-Puech, repressive policy is no longer enough. His city launched debates on the question at the center of the Red Cross. “We must put in place public policies on the subjectsupports the mayor. Like tobacco and alcohol, a clear policy is needed to regulate consumption.
The elected official relies on the report of the economic, social and environmental council in favor of a framed legalization. But residents fear a call for air. The mayor assures us that this will not be the case. “The experimentation will be reserved for a certain number of consumers”explains the mayor.
“They will be followed by doctors and addictologists. There will be no point in coming to Bègles to look for cannabis for free consumption, because there will be none.”

On the substance of the project, the association Addictions France supports the initiative of the mayor, but on the form the president Bernard Basset, doctor in public health is less convinced. “Making experimental islands can come up against difficulties in relation to neighboring municipalities. A national measure, as in Germany, would be preferable.” Clément Rossignol-Puech, who also praises the economic benefits, calls on other municipalities to carry out this experiment. The ecologist mayor hopes to be able to present a project to the government at the end of the year.
