A referendum was held in New Caledonia on Sunday December 12. The no to independence largely won in a vote marked by a strong abstention.

Sunday December 12 in New Caledonia, the population was called upon to vote on its independence. For the third time, it was the no that won, this time with 96.49% of the vote. The referendum was also marked by a low turnout: only 43.90%. The separatists had called not to vote, and demanded the postponement of this poll because of the health context.

Roch Wamytan, president (FLNKS) of the Congress of New Caledonia, announced that his camp did not recognize the result of the vote. “We consider this referendum to be a bogus referendum, a masquerade“, he adds. If he took note of this context of strong abstention, Emmanuel Macron expressed his pride for the nation.”Tonight, France is more beautiful because New Caledonia has decided to stay there“, declares the President of the Republic. An 18-month transition period opens in New Caledonia, in order to define the level of autonomy in the archipelago.
