Opinion – Inflated food prices, enough is enough!

Last December 5, we read this in The duty. “Faced with rising food prices, many Canadians have turned to food banks. Their attendance “increased by 15% in Canada” […]. And the three experts consulted by The duty agree that the trend will continue in 2023.”

On March 9, in The Journal of Quebec, it also read: “All three chains posted higher profits in the first half of 2022 than in the previous five years for the same period. Of the number, Loblaw stands out, with profits of $180 million more for this period, or an additional $1 million per day. »

Enough is enough !

Currently, the major grocery chains (Empire, Metro, Loblaw) are chasing each other with ridiculous specials One week ground meat is selling for $8 a pound and the next week for $4 a pound! Well let’s see… who pocketed the $4 from the previous week?

There is nothing rational or economical in that! There is only a sad marketing strategy for the banner that imposes it to be able to keep its market share to guarantee shareholders a good return on investment and thus allow the CEO, who endorses the application of this strategy, to keep a salary worthy of the name, which places him in the circle of millionaires, that is to say at least 7 to 8 million dollars.

This is not rational economic logic, it is pure capitalist logic. Don’t confuse economics with capitalism!

And stop telling me stories about the impact of the pandemic, supply chains, understaffing and whatever! Bullshit, bullshit and “bullshit”! Tell us the whole truth… Tell us that the unscrupulous, like the banks, the oil companies and others, are filling their pockets.

I invite all citizens who are tired of seeing prices go up, up and up, while their income is not keeping up, to ask to see the general manager of their grocery store to tell him that enough is enough. is enough ! You have to apply the fair price rule… And if he tells you that he has only a small margin of maneuver vis-à-vis the banner, then let the bosses of the banner know that the consumers have had enough.

When the price doesn’t make sense, if it’s not essential, leave the item on the checkout counter!

Also ask to see your deputy to tell him between four eyes: enough is enough! Do something ! And if he tells you he can’t do anything for you, well, tell him to quit. Let him give way to someone who has a little more imagination and political courage than him.

Tell him that we miss Jacques Parizeau, Riccardo Petrella, Adam Smith, even the government of Pierre Elliott Trudeau, which applied price and wage control measures during a similar crisis.

Tell him to suggest to his big boss prime minister an original idea or two. Lowering taxes on basic essentials, controlling food prices, fining banners that yo-yo with the prices of basic foodstuffs or colluding with each other to keep prices up, taxing miraculous profits… There is no shortage of ideas. Capital needs to be taxed until everyone comes to their senses!

It’s the same with the price of gasoline. Who still believes in the free competition of this fool’s market? Well then ! Read the minutes of the last OPEC meeting!

Ask to see your MP this time and suggest lowering gas taxes. If he replies that he cannot deprive his government of such a good inflow of money, remind him who elected him!

Remind him that it is shameful for a representative of the people to be in the pay of big business that financed his electoral campaign It is a denial of democracy and a vile submission to the dictates of big business that lock us into a suicidal logic unlimited growth. Let him resign, too…

Tell him, “Damn! Show a little imagination and political courage! Let him promote a new tax, and this one, on corporate capital or on stock market transactions, or whatever! In any case, let it act so that the price of basic foodstuffs stops rising!

Remind him who elected him! That it was not the political contributors to the party who financed his election! The first duty of a deputy is towards his electors!

Write on your Facebook wall or other social networks: “Enough is enough! No more madness! Food must come back at a fair price! »

Write an open letter on your social networks or copy mine… I allow you to do so without problem!

Talk to those around you.

Let us leave on the counters of the cash registers the foodstuffs which are overpriced. Let’s ring the recess bells. Enough is enough ! And for those who go back to sleep saying that all this is useless, it’s wrong! It is the apathy and the unconditional acceptance of a system with the drift which is not used for nothing!
