From Monday, June 12, the National Assembly will look into medical deserts. With this question: should doctors be prohibited from opening their practice where there are already many doctors?

Since the beginning of the month, in Froidfond (Vendée), there is no longer a general practitioner. The mayor of the city, which has 2,200 inhabitants, is struggling to find a new one but the candidates are not jostling despite the ease of installation. The National Assembly will look into medical deserts in the coming days. With this question: should doctors be prohibited from opening their practice where there are already many doctors? The initiative is supported by 200 deputies.

A risk of declining vocations

“What we offer is the regulation of the installation according to health needs”explains Guillaume Garot, PS deputy for Mayenne. “It is unacceptable in our Republic that according to its postal code, we do not have the same access to care”, he laments. But this proposal does not have the favors of the government. The union of general practitioners believes that such a measure could lead to a decline in vocations.
