(Quito) Two people died Sunday in Ecuador while participating in the traditional 15 km Quito-Ultimas Noticias race, which attracts many foreign athletes, according to the organizers.
“The organization of the race confirms the death of two people on the athletic course due to cardio-respiratory arrest,” the organizer said in a statement, without specifying the identities or nationalities of the victims.
This race, which is in its 60e edition, brought together around 20,000 runners between the headquarters of the daily Ultimas Noticiasin the south of Quito, and the Atahualpa Olympic Stadium, in the north of the capital of Ecuador located at 2850 meters above sea level.
The event was won by Bolivian Héctor Garibay for the men in 45 min 7 s, and by Peruvian Rocio Cantara in 52 min 27 s for the women.
