(Paris) Ontario’s Bianca Andreescu and her New Zealand playing partner Michael Venus lost 4-6, 6-4 and 10-6 to Japan’s Miyu Kato and Germany’s Tim Puetz in the final of the mixed doubles tournament at the French Tennis Open on Thursday.
Kato has therefore moved on from her controversial disqualification from the women’s doubles tournament which occurred last week in Paris.
Kato, 28, and her women’s doubles playing partner were disqualified in their third-round match after the Japanese accidentally hit a ball attendant in the neck with a ball after a point.
She was also fined 21,500 euros (about $31,000) and relieved of all her ranking points in women’s doubles. Kato, however, was able to continue his journey in mixed doubles. And she took her chance.
In singles, Czech Karolina Muchova meets Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka in the first match of the women’s semi-finals later today. This duel will be followed by that between the favorite of the tournament, the Polish Iga Swiatek, and the Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia.
