In Albi (Tarn), a health center run solely by retired doctors opened its doors on Monday June 5, reports France Bleu Occitanie. This is a first in France, authorized just a few days ago by the ARS and the Ministry of Health. At the moment, eight retired doctors work there. They must be 13 at the end of the summer.
This “medical center for primary and non-scheduled care” opened in the old center of the city a few steps from the cathedral. It was imagined a few months ago by several retired doctors from Albigensian sorry to see no one taking over their practice or their patients. Together, they created the Albigensian Association of Retired Doctors (Amra).
11% of Tarn residents have no attending physicians
At 74, Dr. Yves Carcailler, president of Amra, still wanted to make himself useful. Retired for a year, he explains that he and his colleagues created this center “to serve the population, as long as it is necessary. The day when it is no longer necessary, we stop”.
The structure is supported by Albi hospital, which notably supplies the three medical secretaries who work there. The city of Albi also provides the premises used, which required 50,000 euros of work. The Tarn CPAM estimates that more than 11% of Tarn residents do not have attending physicians. They will be more than 25% in 2025, according to projections.
The doctors of this health center cannot, however, become the treating doctors of the patients. They can either redirect the patient to his doctor, or take care of him until he finds one.
