A preliminary magnitude 4.9 earthquake rocked southern Haiti early Tuesday, killing at least three people and injuring several, officials said.
The tremor occurred before dawn near Jérémie, along the country’s southern coast, just ten kilometers underground, according to US geological authorities.
The three victims were extricated from the rubble of a house that rescuers continue to search, said an official from the Haitian Civil Protection Agency.
Several children were hospitalized for injuries sustained when they tried to run away.
This earthquake comes almost two years after the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that killed some 2,000 people in August 2021. The city of Les Cayes had been heavily damaged. Some victims who lost their homes at this time are still living in tents.
