Explosions were heard in kyiv late Monday morning after another night of strikes.

Aftermath of the drone attack “the most important” on Kiev since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Ukrainian capital has faced heavy missile fire on Monday, May 29, forcing residents to take refuge in underground shelters. This attack, launched in broad daylight, followed another night of strikes. Here’s what to remember from this day on the war front in Ukraine.

New strikes during the night

According to the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valery Zaluzhny, “up to 40 cruise missiles” were fired overnight from Sunday to Monday from planes over the Caspian Sea, and “about 35 drones” from the north and the south. In Kyiv, “more than 40 aerial targets” were destroyed overnight, according to the military administration.

A dozen explosions heard in kyiv

Anti-aircraft sirens sounded again Monday morning in the capital, followed by a series of explosions around 11:10 a.m. local time. A dozen explosions were heard in the center of kyiv, shortly after the aerial sirens were triggered, AFP journalists noted. “Explosions in the city, in central districts”wrote on Telegram the mayor of the capital, Vitali Klitschko. “Air defense is in action”for its part added the military administration of kyiv.

Many residents took refuge in underground shelters, especially in the metro. Debris from downed missiles fell on at least three neighborhoods in the north and east of the city, causing in particular a fire, according to the military administration.

A Ukrainian military site hit overnight

The Khmelnytsky regional administration in western Ukraine announced that a military site had been hit by a Russian attack during the night from Sunday to Monday. Authorities have reported“fires in fuel depots” and military equipment and a damaged airstrip. “Five flying devices have been taken out of service”the administration added.

Ukrainian sanctions against Iran

On Monday, Ukrainian MPs adopted a draft sanctions against Iran, a country accused of supplying arms to Moscow. This sanctions package includes a ban on military trade with Iran, a halt to the transit of such goods through Ukraine and the “suspension of economic and financial obligations in favor of Iranian residents”.

Denmark promises an additional 2.4 billion euros to Ukraine

Denmark will donate nearly 2.4 billion additional euros to Ukraine via a fund mainly intended to procure military equipment, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen announced on Monday. “It is now that the Ukrainians need our arms and our support, hence the urgency”she said.

Denmark also announced in mid-May that it would play an important role in training Ukrainians to pilot American F-16 fighter jets, as part of a European plan. Mette Frederiksen has not ruled out a donation of Danish F-16s to Kyiv in the future.
