The Turks re-elected Recep Tayyip Erdogan for a third term on Sunday May 28. What are the reactions in Brussels? We take stock with journalist Julien Gasparutto, live from the Belgian capital, Monday, May 29.

On Sunday May 28, Recep Tayyip Erdogan was re-elected for a third term as head of Turkey. “All European leaders congratulated the Turkish President on his re-election. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Charles Michel look forward to working with Recep Tayyip Erdogan again.”, indicates the journalist Julien Gasparutto, live from Brussels (Belgium), Monday, May 29. He specifies that behind the scenes “the vast majority of Europeans hoped for an alternation in Türkiye”because “relations with the Turkish president are very complicated”.

An “unpredictable” president

For example, in Ukraine, the head of state “condemns the aggression”but “he refuses to apply the sanctions imposed by the European Union against Russia”. It also blocks Sweden’s membership To NATO. “With its close neighbours, Greece and Cyprus, relations are stormy. And, it regularly exerts pressure on the European Union on the migration issue”, explains Julien Gasparutto. Now re-elected, the Turkish president could let go of some issues. However, a diplomat recalls that he “remains unpredictable”.
