Murder of a Quebecer in Mexico | Authorities make an arrest

Mexican police have arrested a man in connection with the murder of a Quebec man in the Pacific coast resort town of Puerto Escondido last week.

The Oaxaca state attorney general said in a statement Friday that an arrest warrant has been issued for a Puerto Escondido man identified only by his initials.

The Attorney General’s statement did not contain the specific charges, but mentioned that a judge would decide the next steps in this case.

According to prosecutors, this suspect was arrested in connection with the murder of Victor Masson, who was found dead in his car on May 15 in this neighborhood where tourists usually stay.

The suspect, originally from Puerto Escondido, is identified only by his initials.

Days after the victim’s body was discovered, a local prosecutor confirmed that Mr Masson’s murder occurred in connection with an altercation over an unpaid bill at a local restaurant the previous evening.

Victor Masson, 27, was from the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region.

Mexican authorities said he was visiting as a tourist and had arrived in the coastal town the day before the murder with his Mexican girlfriend.

According to the summary of the facts of the prosecutor Bernardo Rodriguez Alamillo, Mr. Masson went alone to a restaurant-bar located in the “El Adoquin” sector in Puerto Escondido, while his girlfriend attended an event with people she knew.

The investigation revealed that Mr. Masson met four people – two men and two women – at the restaurant. When paying the bill, an argument broke out between the victim and the other people present.

The prosecutor revealed that after leaving the establishment, Mr. Masson called 911 to report that he had been robbed. He was found dead the next day.

His family confirmed his death in a statement after the shooting.

“In order not to interfere with the investigation that has been opened, when we are able to send you the progress, a press release will be produced. The family supports the crisis management. In closing, the family of Victor Masson asks the press to respect their privacy, fearing that the dissemination of false information in the context of this file could harm the investigation, ”it is written in the press release.

A spokesperson for the family did not respond to a request for comment on Saturday.
