Forever the first. On May 26, 1993, the city of Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône) was delirious, Olympique de Marseille had just won the Champions League. Basile Boli’s goal in the final against AC Milan (1-0) delivered the crowd a few minutes earlier. The next day, at the Vélodrome stadium, 40,000 people screamed their happiness and came to welcome their heroes.
This title “triggered something” in France
30 years later, the memory of this victory remains firmly anchored in the minds of Marseille. “The head of Basile Boli, we remember it. (…) Forever the first”, proudly says a supporter. All hope to relive such an epic one day. The coronation of OM will have made it possible to launch a whole generation of players within the France team, the one which won the 1998 World Cup. “1993 prepared for 1998, because French football had never won a European Cup as a club, something was triggered”explains Vincent Duluc, journalist at L’Équipe.
