It was the coronation that changed Olympique de Marseille. Just 30 years ago, OM beat AC Milan and brought home the European Cup. In Marseille, everyone remembers it as if it were yesterday.

Forever the first. On May 26, 1993, the city of Marseille is delirious, Olympique de Marseille has just won the Champions League. The whole town is jubilant. Basile Boli’s goal had delivered the crowd a few minutes earlier. The next day, at the Vélodrome stadium, 40,000 people scream their happiness and come to welcome their heroes.

“1993 prepared 1998”

30 years later, the memory of this victory remains firmly anchored in the minds of Marseille. “Ah the head of Basile Boli we remember (…) against AC Milan. Forever the first”, proudly says a supporter. All hope to relive such an epic one day. The victory of Marseille will have made it possible to launch a whole generation of players within the France team, the one which won the 1998 World Cup. “1993 prepared for 1998, because French football had never won a European Cup as a club, something was triggered”specifies Vincent Duluc, journalist at L’Équipe.
