Just 30 years ago, Olympique de Marseille won the Champions League, a match that remains in everyone’s memory in Marseille in the Bouches-du-Rhône. A big party is planned for Saturday, May 27 in the evening.
Forever the first. On May 26, 1993, the city of Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône) was delirious, Olympique de Marseille had just won the Champions League. The whole town is jubilant. Basile Boli’s goal had delivered the crowd a few minutes earlier. The next day, at the Vélodrome stadium, 40,000 people scream their happiness and come to welcome their heroes.
The victory launched the French generation of 1998
30 years later, the memory of this victory remains firmly anchored in the minds of Marseille. “Ah the head of Basile Boli we remember (…) against AC Milan. Forever the first”, proudly says a supporter. All hope to relive such an epic one day.
The victory of Marseille will have made it possible to launch a whole generation of players within the France team, the one which won the 1998 World Cup. “1993 prepared for 1998, because French football had never won a European Cup as a club, something was triggered”specifies Vincent Duluc, journalist at L’Équipe.
