TRUE OR FAKE. Will the rate of unemployed seniors go down with the pension reform, as the Borne government claims?

Will the pension reform be able to solve the problem of the employment rate of seniors, which today stands at 56% among 55-64 year olds in France? That’s what the government thinks. And yet. “QWhen the retirement age is shifted, people no longer have the right to a pension. They have a solution: it is to work. Most will keep their job, and the other will lose it (…) and will have trouble finding it again. We are increasing the number of unemployed seniors”says Bruno Coquet, doctor in economics.

Rise in the number of older unemployed after the 2010 pension reform

This is the conclusion of a UNEDIC study, published on March 1, 2023, which shows that the postponement of the legal age rather increases the unemployment of seniors. He observes a marked increase ins conventional terminations after age 59. According to the study, raising the legal age from 60 to 62 hasborn aan increase of 100,000 recipients over 60 between 2010 and 2022.

The government does not deny the problem and intends to push companies to act. He would be in favor of overtaxing contractual terminations. But for specialists, there is no evidence that this will change anything. For now, the data leans towards the hypothesis of an increase in seunemployed people after thise reform.
