Québec solidaire (QS) wants the salary increase for deputies to come into force only in 2026, after the next election.
The party is reaching out to other political parties to support its amendment to the bill. The request was made in a letter from QS parliamentary leader Alexandre Leduc.
Mr. Leduc affirms in the same breath that his political party still wants the government to give up raising the salaries of MPs.
The Parti Québécois (PQ) says it is more in agreement with QS’s proposal.
This would ensure that it is not the elected officials in place who would vote for a salary increase; they should be elected to benefit from this increase, explained PQ MP Pascal Bérubé.
The elected members of the PQ are still dithering over whether they will support the Coalition avenir Québec (CAQ) bill. They should announce their decision in the next few hours.
The CAQ wants to have the salary increase for MPs adopted before the end of the parliamentary session on June 9.
