In western Spain, a major fire has broken out and is causing serious concern a few weeks before summer. Thousands of hectares were burned, 700 people were evacuated. The wind also continues to blow, which worries the rescuers and the inhabitants.
The mountain of Las Hurdes in Spain has turned into a huge inferno. We see sheaves of fire as far as the eye can see. Faced with this fire out of control, the firefighters seem overwhelmed. In all, for the time being, 8,000 hectares have been destroyed since Wednesday, May 17. The firefighters’ task is complicated by the wind that constantly blows through the oak and eucalyptus forests of the rural western Spanish region. Last night, the flames came dangerously close to homes scattered around the area.
A country on the front line of climate change
In all, 700 residents were evacuated as a precaution. Some were housed in a gymnasium. “The fire has surrounded the entire area where my house is located. I am not allowed to go see my animals, nor those of my father”confides a disaster victim. “The fire is almost arriving in the houses, we are really scared”adds another. Spain is on the front line of climate change. It has already faced a historic drought and exceptionally high temperatures for the season.
