The family of the tourist from Saguenay who was murdered in the state of Oaxaca in Mexico is “in shock” as the identity of the latter was revealed by the Mexican media.
Victor Masson, 27, was shot and killed in a car on Monday in the southern resort town of Puerto Escondido.
According to what the Office of the Attorney General of the State of Oaxaca explained on Tuesday and what local media reported, the victim, a mortgage financing advisor for the Laurentian Bank, was on vacation.
According to information obtained by TVA Nouvelles, Victor Masson’s spouse is of Mexican origin and they were both in the country to visit members of his family.
The man was allegedly murdered with a firearm, but no motive was given to explain the circumstances surrounding this murder.
According to the Spanish newspaper El Paísthe events would have taken place in the district of Arroyo Seco, a few kilometers north of the beaches.
Crisis management
The spouse of one of Mr. Masson’s brothers and spokesperson for the family, Annie Viau, affirms that “the family takes charge of crisis management”, while several members of it have learned of the tragic death of a loved one by the media.
For the moment, nothing makes it possible to determine in what circumstances the death of Victor Masson occurred. The family is still swimming in mystery about what could have happened.
“In order not to harm the investigation which has been opened, when we will be able to send you the progress, a press release will be produced”, she explains in a written communication intended for the Log.
Security alerts are in effect in several regions of Mexico “due to high crime rates and the risk of kidnappings” according to the Global Affairs Canada website. The state of Oaxaca, however, is not one of the areas targeted by the government.
Second deceased tourist
This is the second time in a few days that a foreign tourist has been killed in this region of Mexico.
Last Friday, three Argentinian tourists were attacked with machetes by a 21-year-old suspect, local media reported.
One of the victims, Benjamin Gamond, died of his injuries, while the other two men attacked are recovering from theirs.
