The former President of the Republic was sentenced, on appeal, to three years in prison, including a year closed, Wednesday, May 17, in the wiretapping case. He is the first former head of state to be sentenced to wear an electronic bracelet.

Face closed, Nicolas Sarkozy leaves the hearing, Wednesday, May 17. He has just been sentenced for active corruption and influence peddling to three years in prison, including one year firm, under placement of an electronic bracelet and three years of deprivation of his civic rights. “This decision seems amazing to me, it is open to criticism, questionable, in law, in fact. We will not let go of this fight, a fair fight, in the face of a particularly iniquitous and unfair decision”said his lawyer, Jacqueline Laffont.

The lawyer also indicated that she would file an appeal in cassation today. Thierry Herzog received the same sentence. “Justice sometimes finds it difficult to recognize its mistakes. What is important today is that Thierry Herzog is appealing in cassation”, argues the latter’s lawyer. Gilbert Azibert, a Monegasque judge accused of passive corruption, is also sentenced to three years, including one year, for having provided information to the first two convicts on the Bettencourt affair, in exchange for a hypothetical promotion. Legal troubles are piling up for the former president convicted in the Bygmalion case. In the Libyan financing case, the national financial prosecutor’s office has just asked for it to be referred to the criminal court.
