(Farmington) At least three people have died and several others have been injured in a shooting in Farmington, in the US state of New Mexico.
Schools in the area have been put on lockdown.
“There are multiple civilian casualties,” the Farmington Police Department said in a Facebook post. A suspect “was confronted and shot on the spot”.
Two officers were shot and injured, the publication said, including a member of the City Police and a member of the New Mexico State Police, according to the post. Both are in stable condition at San Juan Regional Hospital.
“The identity of the suspect is unknown and there are no other known threats at this time,” it read. The state police department came to reinforce the municipal agents.
The shooting was reported shortly after 11 a.m. in the Brookside Park neighborhood, and all schools in the city were placed in “preventive confinement”. Three nearby schools have been placed in emergency lockdown.
Megan Mitchell, a spokeswoman for the San Juan Sheriff’s Office, said the investigation is ongoing and authorities could not immediately provide more information.
Farmington is a city of nearly 50,000 people located in northwestern New Mexico near the Four Corners region. It serves as a modern trading post for the adjacent Navajo Nation and is a supply line and bedroom community for the region’s oil and natural gas industry.
