(Quebec) Minister Simon Jolin-Barrette “bypasses the spirit of the recommendations of the Bastarache report” regarding the appointment of judges, accuses PQ leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon.
The leader of the Parti Québécois (PQ) refers to the fact that the Minister of Justice has canceled four calls for judge nominations since 2020.
The Bastarache report is at the origin of the creation of an independent committee which recommends candidates for judicial positions to the Minister of Justice.
According to Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, Mr. Jolin-Barrette bypasses the process so that those who have applied for the first time cannot apply again.
He asks that an independent ethics expert look into these events and rethink this process.
Mr. St-Pierre Plamondon affirms that the Coalition avenir Québec (CAQ) has not put an end to partisan appointments as it had promised.
François Legault fired several arrows at the PQ during his party’s convention this weekend. According to Mr. St-Pierre Plamondon, this shows that his political party is the main opponent of the CAQ.
