After mustard, which has been lacking on supermarket shelves for a while, it could be the turn of orange juice concentrate. A global shortage awaits.. For what reasons?
Orange juice prices are constantly rising: +20% in two years, and the rise should continue. The global orange juice market is tight due to very poor harvests in recent months. Climate change is hitting the major orange-growing regions like Arcadia, Florida (United States) with full force. Nearly the entire crop of orange grove owner Vernon C. Hollingsworth was wiped out by Hurricane Ian in September 2022.
Prices are rising all over the world
Prices for orange concentrates are rising all over the world. In a juice factory in Sarre-Union (Bas-Rhin), manufacturing is increasingly difficult. Jean-Luc Etter, director of the “Jus de fruits d’Alsace”, adds water to the concentrate to reconstitute the juices. The mixture has been getting way too expensive for a year. “We bought our ton of orange concentrate for 2,400 euros, today we are at 3,400”, he explains. According to the French fruit juice industry, the unprecedented situation threatens global supply.
