[Lettre] Against rising military spending

Dare, finally, to oppose the increase in military spending! I am delighted to read in a text by the Échec à la guerre collective (The duty, May 6-7, 2023) that militarist mobilization is contrary to the search for collective security of the peoples of the world and I deplore our passivity in the face of pressure from NATO to increase our military expenditure to the minimum threshold of 2% gross domestic product (GDP). Our military spending is now at 1.4% of GDP. They have increased by 67% since 2014. I am, however, pleasantly surprised to learn that, according to a secret Pentagon document quoted by the washington postour Prime Minister would have admitted that we would never reach that 2% target.

Increasing our military budget increases the opportunities to participate in conflicts and to suffer all its horrifying consequences, the dead, the wounded, the displaced, the destruction, whereas all our resources should go towards improving the living conditions for all populations of the world and the preservation of the climate for the survival of our planet. If we want peace, stop preparing for war!
