Tuesday, May 9, the National Assembly examines a bill to make the European flag compulsory in front of town halls, a divisive measure.

The European flag flies alongside the French flag over the mayor of Dinan (Côtes-d’Armor). This situation could become generalized. “I was convinced that it was already official”, wondered a woman. A man believes: “Since we are in Europe, it seems normal to me.” Tuesday, May 9, in the National Assembly, a majority bill is examined. Its objective is to make the French and European flags compulsory.

A divisive bill

In Dinan, the mayor has been doing this since 2014. “Waving the European flag next to the French flag, […] it shows that we belong to a community that goes beyond us”, assures the city councilor (Horizons), Didier Lechien. Other towns also have their own flag, such as Vélizy-Villacoublay (Yvelines). Only, the mayor, Pascal Thévenot, judges that this bill is far from urgent. Citizens remain divided on a new mandatory. Deputies from La France Insoumise, the Rassemblement National and the Modem have made it known that they will not support this proposal.
