The number of attacks on secularism at school is increasing. “About 500 cases” were recorded in March, said Sunday, May 7 the Minister of National Education, Pap Ndiaye, on France 3. In February, 282 cases had been counted, against 280 in January.
This barometer identifies both the wearing of signs and outfits of a religious nature, verbal provocations, contestation of teachings, refusal of republican values, community demands in some 59,260 schools, colleges and high schools.
“The figures (…) show a decrease since the peak in October. There is always a peak in October linked in particular to the commemoration of the assassination of Samuel Paty. And then there is always a rise, each year during Ramadan, advanced the minister, without providing details on the nature of these attacks on secularism in recent weeks. “The month of April, we will have the figures soon, it will go down”, due to the end of Ramadan, but also “Spring Break”.
