Diving World Cup | Pamela Ware wins silver in 3m

(Montreal) Quebecer Pamela Ware won the silver medal in the 3-meter springboard on Sunday at the Diving World Cup in Montreal.

Ware, of Greenfield Park, climbed to the podium for the second time this weekend, after winning bronze with Mia Vallée in the 3m synchro on Friday. She also provided Canada’s second medal in this competition.

China’s Yiwen Chen posted her second victory in as many 3m events on the World Cup circuit this season, after scoring 404.70 in the final. Ware followed in second place with 365.40 points, while American Sarah Bacon rounded out the podium with 357.85.

As for Vallée, from Beaconsfield, she finished ninth.

This is an encouraging result for Ware, who is still trying to rebuild her confidence after the trauma she experienced at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. In fact, after her fifth and final dive of the day, she n was able to hold back her tears as she hugged her trainer, then Vallée, by the pool.

The 30-year-old Quebec diver had completely frozen in her take-off jump in the semi-finals of the Olympic 3m tournament before simply dropping feet first into the pool, resulting in a score of 0. images that had gone around the world at the time.

Meanwhile, Alberta’s Caeli McKay finished fifth in the 10m, two steps ahead of her compatriot, Ontarian Celina Toth.

Meanwhile, Bryden Hattie of Victoria, BC, finished ninth in the morning 3m final.

Quebecer Nathan Zsombor-Murray will participate later Sunday in the men’s 10m final.

The Montreal World Cup will end with a mixed team event, which is not, however, part of the Olympic programme.

The Montreal stopover in 2023 is the first international diving competition to take place in the city since the start of the coronavirus pandemic in March 2020.

It is also the second stage of the season in the World Cup, after the one which took place in China in April. The top 18 athletes in the individual events, as well as the top eight teams in synchro, will qualify for the World Cup Super Final to be held in August in Berlin, Germany.

Meanwhile, the World Championships will be staged in Fukuoka, Japan from July 14-22.
