Seven people died and several others were injured on Sunday morning in Texas when a vehicle rammed them outside a migrant center, police said.
The car “ran over several people who were waiting at a bus stop,” Brownsville police spokesman Martin Sandoval told a local television station.
Seven people were killed, the driver of the vehicle was arrested and is receiving treatment, he added.
He will be prosecuted for dangerous driving, but he could be targeted by other charges during the day, according to Mr. Sandoval.
The investigation will determine if it was an accident or a deliberate act, said the official.
According to testimonies, it seems “that the car lost control. Now whether it was an accident or was it intentional is still under investigation,” he claimed.
The news comes as authorities prepare for the lifting on Thursday of a health measure allowing migrants to be expelled without delay, “Title 42”. Its expiration has authorities fearing a spike in illegal entries into the United States.
The center for homeless people in front of which the event occurred is currently welcoming migrants due to “the current influx”, according to Mr. Sandoval.
