The New York Rangers and coach Gerard Gallant chose to take different paths, in the wake of the club’s first round elimination from the playoffs.
The Rangers announced the switch, which they called mutual, on Saturday — less than a week after ending a seven-game losing streak against the New Jersey Devils.
“I have enormous respect for Gerard as a coach and as an individual. I really appreciate everything he has done for us on and off the ice over the past two seasons,” general manager Chris Drury said in a statement.
After my assessment of the season and discussions with Gerard, we mutually came to the conclusion that a change would be beneficial for both parties. I wish him and his family the best for the future. Our search for a new head coach will begin immediately.

Gallant led New York to the Eastern Finals in 2022, in his first season with the team. He was then a finalist for the Jack Adams Trophy, as coach of the year.
In a statement sent by the team, Gallant thanked owner James Dolan and Drury for the opportunity.
“The experience of coaching a team with such a rich history and incredibly passionate fans is something I will never forget,” said Gallant. After conversations with my family and with Chris, it became clear that this is the right decision for me and for Rangers. »
The team hasn’t won the Stanley Cup since 1994.
Against the Devils, Rangers won the first two games in Newark, before losing three in a row.
New York avoided elimination at home to force a Game 7, but the team then lost 4-0 to New Jersey.
