Potted tree: everything you need to know

This text is part of the special book Plaisirs

Trees have a host of well-known benefits. What if we told you that you can enjoy it even if you have a limited space? Yes, you just have to grow them in pots! Here are our top tips.

This method has been used elsewhere in the world for thousands of years. We can think of bonsai, these mini potted trees cultivated by the Chinese for more than 2000 years, or lemon tree gardens in the Mediterranean. Of course, these trees would not thrive in the Quebec climate, but there are several other varieties that will give you every chance of success.

Before embarking on this adventure, you will have several things to consider. To ensure your success, you must choose the right trees, select the best containers and know the right maintenance methods. While many of us are rushing to garden centers, here are some tips in bulk.

Select the ideal tree

• Avoid fast-growing or large-spreading species. Their roots will choke on a container, which could kill your trees.

• Get a tree that tolerates a lower hardiness zone than yours. Winter conditions are more difficult for plants grown in containers. So, for example, choose a strain that can live in zone 4 if you are in zone 5.

Find the winning pot

• Select the right size. The bigger your pot, the happier your tree will be! It will be more resistant to temperature variations during the winter, and its roots will benefit from the additional space to develop. As a result, your tree will stay healthy much longer. For this type of culture, we recommend a pot of at least 85 liters (3 cubic feet).

• Avoid sandstone and cement. These porous materials are more sensitive to temperature variations and can crack during the cold season.

• Insulate the inside of the pot with styrofoam. A layer of 2.5 centimeters (1 inch) will increase your chances of success.

Maintenance tips

• Pay attention to your tree’s water needs. Its root system is limited by the container, so it must not lack anything. However, avoid excesses and don’t forget the fertilizer!

• Prepare your tree for winter. You can lay it on the ground and cover it with a geotextile fabric. This will keep it safe from high winds and extreme temperatures.

• Check the roots after five years. If they form spirals at the bottom of the pot, you will have to prune them. You can take the opportunity to change the container and add compost to the soil.
