The American medical technology giant Medtronic CryoCath, which received more than $16 million in subsidies under the Liberal era, has just laid off 113 workers at its Pointe-Claire plant.
“After careful analysis and reflection, we have made the difficult, but necessary decision to reduce our workforce at our MMO (Medtronic Operations in Montreal) facilities in Canada,” confirmed to the Log Monika Paquette, of Medtronic CryoCath.
Under the era of former Prime Minister Jean Charest, in 2012, Medtronic obtained a $15 million grant to “ensure Quebecers a quality future, a healthy future,” commented the Prime Minister.
At the time, the investment was for a $50 million project to expand facilities at Medtronic CryoCath.
The company received another $1.25 million four years later, this time under former Prime Minister Philippe Couillard, under the ESSOR program.
More than 113?
Asked repeatedly about the exact number of workers affected, Medtronic CryoCath would not confirm the number of 113 in the layoff notice.
“As far as possible, we will offer employment within the company to employees working in other areas where the needs arise”, it was however assured.
“We are committed to ensuring that all employees are treated fairly and to working with all those who must deal with change in order to minimize its impact,” it concluded.
