From May 5 to 7, 2023, the 16th edition of Tous à l’opéra is held, an open house operation to encourage the public to go to the opera. In Caen, the event is twofold. Because Tous à l’opéra is also an opportunity to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Orchester Régional de Normandie. A weekend full of events, workshops and concerts. Among the events, the presentation on Saturday May 6 of The one who says yes – The one who says no by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill. On stage, college students from the Maîtrise de Caen. Forty teenagers and a first on stage for some. A studious but also festive atmosphere for these promising young artists.
Alongside professional soloists, these teenagers amaze with their professionalism. The Choir of the Maîtrise de Caen is proud to participate in this operation. “I’ve already done a solo and I’m not too nervous and I’m very happy to do that”, explains Isaac, 12, who sums up the state of mind of these young artists.
Brecht and obedience
A welcome ease and relaxation to interpret a difficult work. The one who says yes – The one who says no, written in 1929 by Berthold Brecht immerses us in a city hit by an epidemic. A young boy whose mother is sick decides to accompany adults to find an antidote. A grueling journey during which those who cannot follow are sacrificed. “This work raises the question of obedience, should we obey everything?”, asks Patrick Foll, director of the Théâtre de Caen. “VSThese are obviously still hotly topical subjects”.
Each year, the Maîtrise de Caen allows college students to go on stage. A rich experience that allows the new generation to discover lyrical art. “It brings them a lot of things, like putting themselves in the shoes of a character, presenting themselves in front of an audience and participating in a collective work”, explains Olivier Opdebeeck, musical director of the Maîtrise de Caen.
